Objective: Students will be able to identify the main topic of a text and retell key details to demonstrate understanding, addressing Common Core Standard 1.RI.6.
Learning Objectives

Materials Needed
- A short, age-appropriate informational text (1-2 pages) about animals or plants
- Pencils and erasers
- Paper or notebook for writing

- The most important idea or subject that the text is about.

- Important pieces of information that help explain or tell more about the main topic.
- Retell
- To tell again what happened in the story or text using your own words.
Detailed Activities
Read and Discover the Main Topic
- Read the chosen informational text aloud together with the student.
- Pause after reading to ask, ‘What was this text mostly about?’ and help the student find the main topic.
- Write the main topic on paper and explain why it is the main idea.
Find and List Key Details
- Go back through the text and point out 2-3 important details that tell more about the main topic.
- Write these key details down and discuss how they connect to the main topic.
- Have the student draw one picture that represents the main topic or one key detail.
Retell the Text
- Ask the student to tell you what the main topic is and share the important details using their own words.
- Encourage the student to use the written main topic and details to help them retell.
- Praise their effort and gently correct or add information if needed.
