Listening and Question Practice

  1. Read the short story or poem aloud clearly and slowly.
  2. Show the picture cards and talk about what they represent in the story.
  3. Ask the student simple questions about the story, such as ‘Who is in the story?’ or ‘What happened first?’
  4. Encourage the student to ask one question about the story to you.
  5. Discuss the answers together and talk about why listening carefully helped understand the story.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to focus on the speaker’s words and body language during the activity.
  • If your child has difficulty answering questions, try rephrasing the questions or asking yes/no questions to build confidence.
  • Praise your child for their effort to listen and respond, which helps build strong communication skills.

Assessment Questions

  • Who was the main character in the story?
  • What happened at the beginning of the story?
  • Can you ask me one question about the story?

Extension Ideas

  • Listen to a short audiobook together and discuss the story afterwards.
  • Create your own simple story and take turns asking and answering questions about it.
  • Practice listening and answering questions during daily conversations, such as talking about the day’s activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Try making the questions simpler or more fun, and give your child time to think. You can also answer a question first to model how to respond.

Look for signs like eye contact, nodding, or repeating parts of the story. Asking questions about the story shows they understood what was said.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may confuse listening carefully with simply hearing words without understanding.
  • Some students may answer questions randomly if they do not fully comprehend the story.
  • Students might be shy to ask questions even if they are curious.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter stories or poems with clear pictures to support understanding.
  • Ask yes/no or multiple-choice questions to make answering easier.
  • Allow extra time for responses and provide positive encouragement.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage asking more detailed questions about why characters acted in certain ways.
  • Have the student retell the story in their own words before answering questions.
  • Introduce new vocabulary from the story and discuss meanings.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Allow about 10 minutes for reading and introducing vocabulary.
  • Spend 20 minutes on listening closely and answering questions.
  • Use the last 15 minutes for the student to ask questions and discuss answers.

Standards

  • 1.SL.1b — Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally.
