Lesson Planning Genie mascot Understanding and Retelling Key Details in a Story

  • Students will practice retelling the story in their own words using the details identified.
  • Students will demonstrate understanding by sequencing key parts of the story.

Materials Needed

  • A simple picture book appropriate for kindergarten (e.g., ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?’ by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle)
  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • Story retelling cards (with pictures representing characters and events from the story)

Detailed Activities

Read-Aloud and Discussion

  1. Read the chosen picture book aloud to the student, showing the pictures clearly.
  2. Pause after each page to ask simple questions about what happened and who is in the story.
  3. Encourage the student to point out or name characters and describe events they remember.
Story Retelling with Cards

  1. Show the student the story retelling cards that represent key characters and events.
  2. Help the student arrange the cards in the order the events happened in the story.
  3. Prompt the student to use the cards to retell the story aloud in their own words.
Draw and Tell

  2. Ask the student to explain their drawing and describe what happened in that part of the story.
  3. Praise their effort and gently guide them to include more details if possible.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • This lesson is designed for beginners and focuses on listening, comprehension, and verbal skills.
  • Encourage your child to speak freely; the goal is understanding, not perfect retelling.
  • Use simple, clear language and repeat questions if needed to support your child’s responses.

Assessment Questions

  • Who are the main characters in the story?
  • What happened at the beginning of the story?
  • Can you tell me one important thing that happened in the story?
  • What was your favorite part of the story?

Extension Ideas

  • Read another story and compare the characters and events with the first story.
  • Create a simple storybook together where your child draws pictures and tells you the story.
  • Act out the story using toys or puppets to reinforce understanding of story details.

Frequently Asked Questions

That’s okay! Try asking simple questions about the pictures or their favorite part. Praise any effort they make and try again later.

Just reading together and talking about the story helps a lot. Use the questions and prompts in the lesson to guide your child gently.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may focus only on pictures and not try to use words to retell the story.
  • Some children might retell the story out of order, which is a normal part of learning sequencing.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use more pictures and fewer words to support understanding.
  • Retell the story together, taking turns to say parts.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage adding details or describing characters’ feelings.
  • Ask the child to predict what might happen next or why a character acted a certain way.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend extra time on discussion if your child is engaged and curious.
  • If your child is tired or distracted, shorten activities and revisit on another day.

Standards

  • K.RL.9 — With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.
