Detailed Activities

Show and Tell Presentation

  1. Explain to your child that they will be talking about a special object they bring from home.
  2. Demonstrate how to speak in a complete sentence, for example: ‘This is my favorite toy car. It is red and fast.’
  3. Encourage your child to hold their object and tell one or two sentences about it.
  4. Listen carefully and ask one simple question, like ‘Why do you like it?’ to encourage more speaking.
  5. Praise your child for speaking clearly and sharing their thoughts.
Listening and Responding

  1. After your child shares, model active listening by repeating one thing they said.
  2. Encourage your child to listen when others talk if you have siblings or family members joining.
  3. Practice taking turns speaking and listening to build communication skills.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Keep the atmosphere positive and encouraging to build your child’s confidence in speaking.
  • If your child is shy, you can start by sharing first to model the activity.
  • Use simple questions to guide your child’s sentences and support their language development.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you tell me what your object is and why you like it using a full sentence?
  • Did you remember to speak clearly so I could understand you?
  • Can you listen carefully while I ask you a question about your object?

Extension Ideas

  • Create a ‘Show and Tell’ book by drawing pictures of objects and writing simple sentences about them.
  • Practice speaking complete sentences by describing pictures in storybooks or magazine photos.
  • Invite a family member or friend to participate in the show and tell to practice speaking with different listeners.

Frequently Asked Questions

That’s okay! Start small by letting them talk just to you or a trusted family member. Praise any effort they make and try again later when they feel more comfortable.

Model complete sentences when you speak, gently prompt them by asking questions like ‘What is it?’ or ‘What do you like about it?’ and repeat their answers in a full sentence.

You can do a short show and tell once or twice a week to build confidence and speaking skills gradually.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children might use single words instead of complete sentences.
  • Some children may speak too softly or unclearly for others to understand.
  • Children might be hesitant to speak in front of others due to shyness.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Allow the child to use one or two words paired with gestures initially.
  • Provide sentence starters like ‘This is…’ or ‘I like my… because…’.
  • Practice speaking in a smaller, more familiar setting before a group.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage using more detailed sentences and adding reasons or feelings.
  • Introduce new vocabulary words related to their object.
  • Have the child ask questions to the listener after sharing.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Keep each show and tell sharing to about 3-5 minutes to maintain attention.
  • Allow additional time for follow-up questions and encouragement.
  • Repeat the activity regularly but keep sessions short and positive.

Standards

  • K.SL.6 — Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.
