  3. Write a simple sentence on the board and underline the adjective.
Adjective Practice with Sentences

  2. Encourage them to say the sentence aloud and then write it down if able.
  3. Review the sentences together and praise correct use of adjectives.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to use their senses (what they see, feel, hear) to come up with descriptive words.
  • Keep the atmosphere positive and praise all attempts to use adjectives, even if they’re not perfect.
  • Repeat activities as needed to build confidence and understanding.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you find the adjective in this sentence: ‘The blue sky is pretty’?
  • Tell me an adjective that describes a cat.
  • Make a sentence using the word ‘happy’ to describe something.

Extension Ideas

  • Go on a ‘description walk’ outside and take turns describing things you see using adjectives.
  • Read a short story together and point out adjectives in the text.
  • Create a simple adjective word bank with your child to use during writing activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use tangible examples like toys or objects around the house to show how adjectives describe size, color, or shape, making the concept more concrete.

Encourage your child to explain why they chose a particular adjective and gently correct or guide them by providing examples and repeating practice.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may confuse adjectives with nouns or verbs because they are still learning parts of speech.
  • Some may use adjectives incorrectly by placing them after nouns in English sentences.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use more visual aids and physical objects to teach adjectives.
  • Simplify sentences and focus on one adjective at a time.
  • Provide sentence starters to help frame responses.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge the student to use multiple adjectives in one sentence.
  • Encourage descriptive writing with short paragraphs.
  • Introduce comparative adjectives like bigger, smaller, or more colorful.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend extra time on the introduction if the child is unfamiliar with adjectives.
  • Allow breaks between activities to maintain focus.
  • Repeat practice activities over several days if needed before moving on.

Standards

  • 2.L.2 — Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
