Learning Objectives

Materials Needed

  • A short informational text appropriate for 2nd grade (e.g., a simple article about animals, weather, or plants)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Highlighter or colored pencils

Key Vocabulary

Informational Text
A type of writing that gives facts and information about a topic.
Key Details
Important pieces of information that help us understand the main idea.
Question
A sentence that asks for information.

Detailed Activities

Read and Highlight Key Details

  1. Read the selected informational text aloud with your child.
  2. Ask your child to listen carefully and think about what the text is mostly about.
  3. Reread the text and help your child highlight or underline important facts or details.
  4. Discuss why these details are important to understanding the topic.
Ask and Answer Questions

  1. Model asking questions about the text such as who, what, when, where, why, or how.
  2. Encourage your child to ask their own questions about the information.
  3. Write down the questions and work together to find answers from the text.
  4. Have your child answer the questions in full sentences, using information from the text.
Draw and Describe

  1. Ask your child to draw a picture related to one of the key details from the text.
  2. Have your child describe their drawing and explain how it connects to the information learned.
  3. Discuss how the drawing helps remember the key detail.
