Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may think that short phrases or single words count as complete sentences.
  • Some students may interrupt or speak out of turn, not understanding the importance of listening first.
  • Students might rush through their speaking and not speak clearly or loudly enough.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters to help form complete sentences.
  • Use visual aids like pictures to support understanding and speaking.
  • Allow extra time for thinking before speaking.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge students to add details or explain why something happened in their story.
  • Encourage them to ask questions to the speaker after listening.
  • Have them practice speaking to a small group or recording their speech.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Begin with a short modeling session to introduce the concept (5-7 minutes).
  • Spend most of the time practicing speaking and listening with guided activities (30-35 minutes).
  • End with a quick review or reflection to reinforce learning (5 minutes).

Standards
