A person, place, thing, or idea.

Detailed Activities

Discovering Adjectives with Picture Cards

  1. Show a picture card to your child and name the object or animal on it.
  2. Ask your child to describe the picture using words like color, size, or feelings (e.g., ‘big’, ‘red’, ‘happy’).
  3. Explain that these describing words are called adjectives.
  4. Write the noun and adjective together on the whiteboard or paper (e.g., ‘big dog’).
  5. Repeat with different cards to practice identifying adjectives.
Adding Adjectives to Sentences

  1. Read a simple sentence aloud to your child that has a noun but no adjective (e.g., ‘The cat is on the mat.’).
  2. Ask your child to think of adjectives to add to the sentence (e.g., ‘The fluffy cat is on the mat.’).
  3. Write the new sentence with the adjective included.
  4. Encourage your child to create their own sentences using adjectives describing nouns.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to use their senses (sight, touch, smell) to think of adjectives.
  • Use everyday situations to practice describing objects around you with adjectives.
  • Praise your child’s efforts to use new words, even if they are unsure.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you find the adjective in this sentence: ‘The yellow bird is singing’?
  • Tell me three words that describe your favorite toy.
  • Can you make a sentence using the adjective ‘happy’?

Extension Ideas

  • Create a small picture book where your child draws an object and writes a sentence with adjectives describing it.
  • Play a game where you say a noun and take turns adding adjectives to describe it.
  • Read books together and highlight adjectives you find on each page.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can help by giving examples and asking questions like ‘What color is it?’ or ‘Is it big or small?’ to guide their thinking.

Use objects or topics your child loves, like animals or favorite toys, and keep activities short and playful.

  • Explore adjectives that describe feelings or emotions.

Pacing Recommendations:
