Detailed Activities

Explore Text Features in a Book

  1. Begin by showing the student a nonfiction book and pointing out the table of contents, headings, and glossary.
  2. Discuss what each text feature is and how it helps a reader.
  3. Ask the student to find a heading and describe what they think that section will be about.
Practice Using Text Features

  1. Give the student a short text with clear headings and a table of contents.
  2. Ask questions like, ‘Where would you find information about ___?’ and guide the student to use the text features to find the answer.
  3. Complete a worksheet where the student matches questions to the correct page or section using text features.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to ask questions about the text and use the headings or table of contents to find answers.
  • Be patient and guide them through using these features step-by-step as they build confidence.
  • Praise their efforts to use text features even if they don’t find the answer right away.

Assessment Questions

  • What is the purpose of a table of contents?
  • Can you find the heading that tells about animals in the text?
  • How did you find the answer to that question using the text features?

Extension Ideas

  • Create your own short nonfiction page with headings and a table of contents to help others find information.
  • Look through other books at home and identify different text features together.
  • Use a glossary to find the meaning of new words in a nonfiction book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may think all text is read straight through and not realize text features help find information quickly.
  • Children might confuse headings with regular text and miss their purpose.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use picture books with very clear and simple text features.
  • Work one-on-one to highlight and talk about each feature before reading.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to explain how different text features help organize information.
  • Have them create their own text with headings and a table of contents.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend extra time exploring books with many text features before moving to worksheets.
  • Allow frequent breaks if the child becomes overwhelmed with text.

Standards

  • 3.RI.8 — Describe the logical connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text (e.g., comparison, cause/effect, first/second/third in a sequence).
