Parent & Instructor Notes

  • This lesson focuses on developing important speaking and listening skills that help your child participate confidently in conversations.
  • Be patient and provide encouragement as your child practices asking questions and sharing ideas.
  • Keep the discussions light and fun to maintain engagement and build communication skills naturally.

Assessment Questions

  • Can your child ask a question about a story or topic?
  • Does your child listen carefully and respond to your questions?
  • Is your child able to add their own ideas when talking?

Extension Ideas

  • Encourage your child to have conversations with family members about daily activities, practicing asking and answering questions.
  • Watch a short educational video together and discuss it, asking your child to share their thoughts and questions.
  • Create a simple journal where your child writes or draws about conversations they had or questions they asked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with simple yes/no questions and gradually encourage more detailed answers. Praise all attempts and model conversations yourself to build their confidence.

Try short daily or every-other-day sessions to keep skills fresh without overwhelming your child.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may confuse asking questions with just answering them; emphasize that asking questions is equally important.
  • Some students might provide one-word answers instead of complete thoughts; model and encourage full sentences.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use more visual aids like pictures or storyboards to support understanding.
  • Limit the number of questions to focus on quality responses and build confidence.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage explaining reasons for their ideas or opinions during conversations.
  • Introduce unfamiliar topics or stories to challenge their questioning and listening skills.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 20 minutes on the read-aloud and discussion to maintain attention.
  • Use the remaining 25 minutes for role-play and practicing conversations, allowing flexibility based on the child’s interest and energy.

Standards

  • 3.SL.1c — Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
