Detailed Activities

Listening and Questioning Practice

  1. Parent reads a short story or passage aloud clearly and slowly.
  2. Student listens carefully without interrupting.
  3. After the reading, student thinks of one or two questions about what was heard.
  4. Student either writes down or draws their questions depending on their writing ability.
  5. Parent and student discuss the questions together, with parent helping to clarify answers.
  6. Repeat the activity with a new short story or passage if time allows.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to focus on the speaker and not get distracted during the reading.
  • Help your child understand that asking questions is a helpful way to learn, not a way to interrupt or be rude.
  • Be patient and provide positive feedback to build your child’s confidence in speaking and listening skills.

Assessment Questions

  • What did you hear in the story? Can you tell me one thing you remember?
  • Do you have any questions about the story? What would you like to know more about?
  • Why is it important to listen carefully when someone is talking?

Extension Ideas

  • Listen to a short educational video or audio clip and ask your child to practice asking questions about it.
  • Create a question journal where your child writes or draws questions about things they hear daily.
  • Practice role-playing conversations where your child asks questions to better understand a topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Encourage them gently by starting with simple questions and praise their efforts. Role-playing can also help build confidence.

Ask your child to repeat back what they heard or explain it in their own words to check understanding.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may think listening means just hearing words, not understanding them.
  • Students might believe asking questions is interrupting rather than a way to learn.
  • Some children may confuse recalling details with simply remembering one fact.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter stories or passages with clear, simple language.
  • Allow drawing questions if writing is difficult.
  • Provide more guided prompts to help form questions.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to ask different types of questions (who, what, where, why, how).
  • Encourage summarizing the story before asking questions.
  • Have them ask questions that connect the story to their own experiences.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Allow 5–10 minutes for the reading to ensure understanding.
  • Spend 10–15 minutes discussing and forming questions.
  • Use the remaining time for review and additional practice or extension activities.

Standards

  • 3.SL.2 — Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
