Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may think a paragraph can be just one sentence.
  • They might confuse the main idea with a detail or example.
  • Students often write unrelated sentences instead of supporting the main idea.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Allow oral responses before writing to reduce writing pressure.
  • Provide sentence starters or word banks to support writing.
  • Work on one sentence at a time, focusing on clarity and completeness.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage writing longer paragraphs with more supporting details.
  • Introduce simple transition words like ‘first,’ ‘next,’ and ‘finally’ to connect ideas.
  • Have students revise their paragraphs to improve clarity and sentence structure.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend extra time on identifying main ideas if necessary before moving to writing.
  • Allow breaks between activities to maintain focus during the 45-minute lesson.
  • Adjust the number of sentences to write depending on the student’s comfort and skill level.
