  2. Discuss the topic sentence and supporting details with the student.
  3. Ask the student to identify the main idea and facts in the example.
Planning Your Own Paragraph

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to talk about their topic before writing to organize thoughts.
  • Praise efforts and focus on clarity rather than spelling or grammar at first.
  • Use simple questions to help your child think about details that explain the main idea.

Assessment Questions

  • What is the main idea or topic of your paragraph?
  • Can you tell me one fact you wrote to explain your topic?
  • Did your paragraph start with a sentence that tells what you are writing about?

Extension Ideas

  • Have your child write a second paragraph adding more facts about the same topic.
  • Create a small booklet with multiple informative paragraphs on different topics.
  • Use drawings or pictures to illustrate the facts in the paragraph.

Frequently Asked Questions

Encourage your child to say the sentences aloud first. You can write them down, then have your child copy or trace the sentences to build confidence.

Focus on asking questions about the topic and helping your child organize their ideas. Writing can be a shared activity where you both contribute.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may confuse informative writing with storytelling or opinion writing.
  • Students might list facts without connecting them clearly to the topic sentence.
  • Students may struggle with organizing facts in a logical order.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Allow oral responses or use drawing to express ideas before writing.
  • Provide sentence starters or fill-in-the-blank templates for the paragraph.
  • Focus on writing just a few sentences clearly rather than a full paragraph.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage writing multiple paragraphs with subtopics.
  • Introduce research by looking up simple facts together.
  • Challenge students to include definitions or examples in their writing.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 10–15 minutes on reading and discussing the example paragraph.
  • Allow 15 minutes for planning with the graphic organizer and organizing ideas.
  • Use the final 15 minutes for writing the paragraph and sharing with the parent.

Standards
