  • Use everyday examples when talking together, like ‘I want to play outside but I need to finish my homework’.
  • Be patient and provide plenty of praise as your child practices this new skill.

Assessment Questions

  • What is a conjunction and why do we use it?
  • Can you find the conjunction in this sentence: ‘I like apples and oranges’?
  • Combine these two sentences using ‘because’: ‘It is raining. I took an umbrella.’

Extension Ideas

  • Read a short story together and highlight all the conjunctions you find.
  • Play a sentence-building game where your child adds conjunctions to connect ideas.
  • Write a short paragraph using at least three different conjunctions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use simple explanations and examples, showing how conjunctions connect parts of sentences, unlike nouns or verbs which have other roles.

Start with very simple sentences and focus on one conjunction at a time, gradually increasing complexity as confidence grows.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may think conjunctions are only ‘and’ and miss others like ‘because’ or ‘although’.
  • Confusing conjunctions with prepositions or other linking words is common at first.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use simpler sentences and focus on one conjunction at a time.
  • Provide sentence starters to help guide their combining of ideas.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to write complex sentences using multiple conjunctions.
  • Introduce less common conjunctions and discuss subtle differences in meaning.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend extra time on identifying conjunctions before moving to sentence combining.
  • Allow for frequent review and practice sessions spread over several days.
