  3. Read an example opinion piece together, pointing out where the opinion and reasons are given.
Brainstorming Opinions and Reasons

  1. Choose a simple topic your child cares about, like a favorite animal or favorite season.

At this stage, a few sentences (3-5) are enough. Focus on clear opinions and at least two reasons.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may confuse opinions with facts; emphasize that opinions are personal thoughts.
  • Some students might write opinions without reasons; remind them that reasons support their opinions.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Allow oral dictation of their opinion and reasons before writing.
  • Use sentence starters like ‘I think…’ and ‘because…’ to help structure writing.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage adding more reasons or examples to support their opinion.
  • Introduce linking words such as ‘also,’ ‘in addition,’ or ‘however’ for more complex writing.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 10 minutes on introduction and discussion.
  • Allow 15 minutes for brainstorming and drafting the opinion piece.
  • Use the last 15 minutes for writing, sharing, and reviewing.

Standards

  • 5.W.1 — Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
