Listening and Clarifying Practice

  1. Parent reads a short story or passage aloud clearly and slowly.
  2. Student listens carefully without interrupting.
  3. After listening, student writes or says one or two questions about parts that were unclear or confusing.
  4. Parent answers the questions clearly, providing more details if needed.
  5. Repeat the process with another short passage or dialogue.
Role Play Asking Questions

  2. The speaker says a few sentences about a familiar topic.
  3. The listener practices asking one or two questions to clarify what was said.
  4. Switch roles and repeat the activity to build confidence.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to focus on listening without interrupting during the reading.
  • Model how to ask polite questions when something is unclear.
  • Be patient and give your child time to think of questions after listening.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you tell me one thing you heard in the story?
  • What question would you ask if you didn’t understand part of the story?
  • Why is it important to ask questions when you don’t understand something?

Extension Ideas

  • Listen to a short audio story or podcast together and practice asking clarification questions afterward.
  • Write down new vocabulary words from the story and discuss their meanings.
  • Create a simple question chart that your child can use to remember different types of questions to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

Encourage them gently by practicing at home in a low-pressure setting, and praise their efforts to build confidence.

Ask them to retell the story in their own words and see if their questions show they are thinking about the meaning.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may think asking questions means they did not listen well, but it actually shows engagement.
  • Some children may interrupt instead of waiting to ask questions.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter passages and simpler language for listening activities.
  • Provide sentence starters for questions (e.g., ‘Can you explain…?’, ‘What do you mean by…?’).
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage them to ask deeper questions that explore feelings or reasons behind the information.
  • Have them summarize what was said before asking clarifying questions.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend extra time on the first activity to model good listening skills clearly.
  • Keep the role play activity short but repeat it often to build confidence.
  • Allow breaks if your child seems restless or distracted.

Standards

  • 6.SL.1b — Follow rules for discussions and ask questions to clear up any confusion about the topics and texts under discussion.
