  3. Choose a simple topic your child knows well, such as their favorite animal or game.
  4. Together, make a list of details and facts about the topic.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to think of specific facts and reasons when writing.
  • Praise their efforts to add details, even if the writing is not perfect.
  • Offer help by asking guiding questions like ‘Why do you like this?’ or ‘What makes it special?’ to help them find details.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you tell me three details that explain your topic?
  • How did you use facts to support your writing?
  • Why is it important to give details when you explain something?

Extension Ideas

  • Create a picture book with detailed descriptions for each page.
  • Write a letter to a friend explaining how to do a favorite activity, using clear details.
  • Interview a family member about their job or hobby and write a paragraph explaining what you learned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Try asking simple questions about the topic to help them think of facts or reasons. Using pictures or objects related to the topic can also spark ideas.

Encourage breaks and keep the writing sessions short. Praise the effort and progress rather than perfection, and use fun topics to keep them interested.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may think they need to write very long explanations instead of clear and focused ones.
  • Some students might confuse opinions with facts when supporting their points.
  • Children sometimes give very general details instead of specific ones.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters or templates to help structure their writing.
  • Use drawing activities to help them organize their thoughts before writing.
  • Work in short sessions focusing on one detail at a time.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage adding examples or comparisons to their explanations.
  • Challenge them to write multi-paragraph explanations including definitions and cause-effect details.
  • Have them revise their work to improve clarity and add more supporting facts.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend the first 10 minutes reading and discussing the example paragraph.
  • Use 15 minutes for brainstorming details and planning the writing.
  • Allow 15 minutes for writing the paragraph with support as needed.
  • Use the last 5 minutes for reviewing and discussing the written work.
