Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may confuse theme with plot; clarify that theme is the message, not just what happens.
  • Some students might think setting is only the place, remind them it includes time as well.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use simpler stories with clear themes and settings.
  • Provide sentence starters to help them express ideas.
  • Allow extra time and repeat readings.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to find multiple themes or compare more than two stories.
  • Encourage writing a short story using a new setting or theme.
  • Discuss how the author’s choices affect the story.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend 15 minutes reading and discussing each story.
  • Use the last 15 minutes for the comparison activity.
  • Allow extra time if your child needs more support with comprehension.

Standards

  • 7.RL.10 — By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, with growing independence and understanding.
