Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to think about what they want to say before writing.
  • Remind them that a good paragraph has one main idea and sentences that support it.
  • Be patient and provide positive feedback to build confidence.

Assessment Questions

  • What is the purpose of a topic sentence?
  • Can you point out the supporting details in the paragraph?
  • Write a paragraph about your favorite hobby using a topic sentence and three supporting details.

Extension Ideas

  • Have your child write a paragraph from the perspective of a character in a story they like.
  • Practice combining two related paragraphs into one by connecting ideas smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Help them by asking simple questions about the topic, such as “Why do you like this?” or “Can you give an example?” This can guide their thinking and make it easier to write.

Encourage them to tell their ideas out loud first. You can write down their words as they speak, then gradually help them try writing their own sentences.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Thinking a paragraph should be only one sentence.
  • Including unrelated details that confuse the main idea.
  • Believing that every sentence must start with the same word.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters to help begin their topic sentence and supporting details.
  • Use graphic organizers to visually arrange ideas before writing.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to include transition words to improve flow.
  • Ask them to write a paragraph that compares two things or explains a cause and effect.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 15 minutes reviewing paragraph structure with examples.
  • Allow 20 minutes for brainstorming and writing their own paragraph.
  • Use the remaining 10 minutes for review, questions, and corrections.
