Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may think that adding ‘s’ always makes a noun plural, but some nouns are irregular.
  • Some verbs may be confused with nouns; emphasizing sentence structure helps.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use more visual aids and hands-on activities with physical objects.
  • Limit the number of verbs introduced and focus on ‘is’ and ‘are’ first.
For Advanced Students:

  • Introduce irregular plural nouns like ‘children’ and ‘mice’.
  • Practice using more varied verbs and creating longer sentences.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Allow extra time for the matching activity if your child needs it.
  • Keep the writing section brief if your child is new to writing.
  • Repeat key concepts over several days for mastery.

Standards

  • 1.L.2b — Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking, focusing on singular and plural nouns and verbs.
