Parent & Instructor Notes

  • This lesson focuses on building attentive listening and comprehension skills important for early reading development.
  • Encourage your child by being patient and giving them time to think before answering or asking questions.
  • Use positive reinforcement to build confidence and make the learning enjoyable.

Assessment Questions

  • Where did the story take place?
  • What happened at the beginning of the story?
  • Can you tell me one thing you liked about the story?
  • Do you have a question about the story?

Extension Ideas

  • Read another story and compare the characters or settings.
  • Create simple question cards together for future storytime sessions.
  • Record your child retelling the story in their own words to build narrative skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Give them extra time and try rephrasing the question. You can also help by pointing to pictures or giving hints to support their understanding.

Doing this activity 2-3 times a week can help improve listening and comprehension steadily without overwhelming your child.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Thinking that the student must remember every detail rather than focusing on key points.
  • Believing that answers must be word-for-word from the story instead of understanding the general idea.
  • Assuming that asking questions is only for adults; children can learn to ask simple questions too.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter stories with clear, simple plots and pictures.
  • Ask yes/no or multiple-choice questions instead of open-ended ones.
  • Repeat the story or parts of it to reinforce comprehension.
For Advanced Students:

  • Ask more detailed questions about the characters’ feelings or motivations.
  • Encourage the student to predict what might happen next or to create their own ending.
  • Invite the student to retell the story in sequence without looking at the book.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend 10-15 minutes reading and discussing the story to keep attention focused.
  • Use 10-15 minutes for drawing and explaining to deepen understanding through creativity.
  • Allow 5-10 minutes for questions and answers, adjusting time based on student engagement.
