  3. Provide a few example sentences with similar unknown words and work together to find clues.
  4. Ask the student to write their own sentence using a new word and explain its meaning using clues.
  5. Review the sentences and meanings together to reinforce the skill.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to look at the whole sentence, not just the unknown word, to find clues about what the word means.
  • Use simple, clear sentences and repeat the activity often to build confidence and skill.
  • Praise your child’s efforts and guesses, even if they are not always correct, to keep them motivated.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you find the word in this sentence that you do not know?
  • What other words in the sentence help you figure out the meaning?
  • Can you tell me what you think this new word means and why?

Extension Ideas

  • Create flashcards with new vocabulary words and their meanings for review.
  • Read a favorite storybook together and pause to discuss any unknown words using context clues.
  • Play word games that involve guessing meanings from clues given in sentences.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s okay! The goal is to encourage thinking about context. Gently guide them to look for more clues and explain why a different meaning might fit better.

Short daily sessions of about 10-15 minutes can be very effective and keep your child engaged without feeling overwhelmed.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may think a word only has one meaning and get confused by multiple meanings.
  • Some children might guess meanings based on a single word rather than the whole sentence.
  • Students might rely too much on pictures or prior knowledge rather than context clues.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use more familiar vocabulary with clearer context clues.
  • Provide visual aids or objects to support understanding.
  • Break down sentences into smaller parts for easier analysis.
For Advanced Students:

  • Introduce sentences with multiple context clues or synonyms.
  • Encourage creating sentences with multiple unknown words.
  • Have students explain differences between similar words using context.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Begin with very simple sentences and one unknown word to build confidence.
  • Spend the first 15 minutes on guided practice with the parent.
  • Use the remaining 30 minutes for independent or semi-independent practice with feedback.
