Frequently Asked Questions

Try asking simpler questions or give choices to help them feel more comfortable. Praise any attempt to answer to build confidence.

If they can answer questions about the story’s who, what, when, where, why, and how, it shows they understand key details.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may guess answers without referring to the story.
  • Children might focus only on pictures and not on the words or story details.
  • Students sometimes answer with unrelated information.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter stories or parts of a story for easier comprehension.
  • Provide picture clues to support answering questions.
  • Ask yes/no or multiple-choice questions before open-ended ones.
For Advanced Students:

  • Ask ‘why’ questions to encourage deeper thinking.
  • Have the student compare two stories and find key details in both.
  • Encourage writing a short summary of the story using key details.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 15 minutes on the read aloud and discussion to maintain attention.
  • Use 10–15 minutes for question and answer practice to build skills gradually.
  • Allow 10–15 minutes for drawing and explaining key details to reinforce learning creatively.

Standards

  • 2.RL.10 — Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
