Parent & Instructor Notes

  • This lesson focuses on helping your child organize their thoughts into a clear paragraph.
  • Be patient and provide plenty of encouragement as writing skills develop.
  • Use examples and graphic organizers to make the writing process less intimidating.

Assessment Questions

  • Can your child identify the topic sentence in a paragraph?
  • Does your child include supporting details that relate to the main idea?
  • Is the paragraph easy to understand and focused on one topic?

Extension Ideas

  • Write paragraphs on different topics to build confidence.
  • Create a short story by combining several paragraphs.
  • Use drawing to help plan paragraphs by illustrating main ideas and details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Encourage brainstorming by asking simple questions about the topic, such as ‘What do you like about it?’ or ‘Can you describe it?’ This can help generate ideas.

Allow your child to dictate ideas while you write, then work together to form sentences. Also, take breaks and keep sessions short to maintain focus.

Try practicing 2-3 times a week for short periods to build skills without overwhelming your child.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may confuse a list of sentences with a coherent paragraph.
  • Children might write unrelated details instead of details that support the main idea.
  • Some students may write very short paragraphs without enough supporting information.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use sentence starters to help begin their topic sentence and supporting details.
  • Allow drawing or verbal explanation before writing.
  • Break the task into smaller steps with frequent check-ins.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage adding transition words to connect ideas within the paragraph.
  • Challenge them to write paragraphs with more complex sentences.
  • Have them explain their writing choices to deepen understanding.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend 15 minutes on reading and discussing the example paragraph.
  • Allow 20 minutes for writing and revising the student’s own paragraph.
  • Use the last 10 minutes for sharing, discussion, and assessment.

Standards

  • 3.W.5 — Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly.
