Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students might think prefixes and suffixes are words by themselves rather than parts of words.
  • Children may confuse the meaning of a word if they don’t understand the root word first.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Focus on one prefix or suffix at a time with simple words.
  • Use visual aids and manipulatives like word cards to support learning.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge them to find and create words with multiple prefixes or suffixes.
  • Introduce less common prefixes and suffixes for extra practice.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 15 minutes introducing concepts and examples.
  • Use 15 minutes for interactive sorting and discussion activities.
  • Reserve the final 15 minutes for worksheet practice and review.

Standards

  • 4.RF.4c — Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to understand the meaning of compound words and words with affixes.
