Detailed Activities

Character Trait Exploration

  1. Read the chosen story or excerpt aloud with your child, pausing to discuss important details about the characters.
  2. Introduce the list of common character traits and explain what each means with examples.
  3. Work together to fill out a graphic organizer identifying a main character’s traits using evidence from the story.
  4. Discuss how these traits influence what happens in the story and how other characters react.
  5. Have your child draw or write a few sentences describing the character using the traits identified.

Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to think about how the character’s feelings and actions connect to the story’s events.
  • If your child struggles with vocabulary, try acting out parts of the story or using pictures to explain traits.
  • Focus on one character at a time to avoid overwhelming your child.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you tell me one trait of the main character and give an example from the story?
  • How did this character’s trait change what happened in the story?
  • What would happen if the character acted differently?

Extension Ideas

  • Read another story and compare the main characters’ traits and how they affect their stories.
  • Create a character diary where your child writes from the character’s perspective based on their traits.
  • Draw a comic strip showing a scene where the character’s traits influence what happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use simple examples like ‘kind’, ‘brave’, or ‘shy’ and relate them to people your child knows. Acting out these traits can also help make the meaning clearer.

Read the story together and pause frequently to ask questions like ‘Why do you think the character did that?’ or ‘What does this part tell us about how the character feels?’

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may confuse character traits with emotions or physical descriptions.
  • Students might describe what a character does instead of why they do it based on traits.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use simpler texts with clear character traits.
  • Provide sentence starters like ‘The character is ____ because ____.’
  • Use pictures or puppets to represent characters.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge students to analyze how multiple characters’ traits interact.
  • Ask them to predict how changing a trait might alter the story.
  • Have them write a short alternate ending based on a different character trait.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 10 minutes reading and discussing the story.
  • Use 20 minutes to fill out the graphic organizer and talk about the character traits.
  • Reserve 15 minutes for drawing or writing activities and review.

Standards

  • 4.RL.5 — Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text.
