Parent & Instructor Notes

  • This lesson helps your child develop important speaking and listening skills needed for classroom discussions.
  • Keep the discussion relaxed and encouraging to build your child’s confidence.
  • You can use any simple story or topic your child enjoys to make the conversation engaging.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you tell me one thing you liked about the story?
  • What question do you have about the story or characters?
  • Can you tell me something your friend said and add your own thought about it?

Extension Ideas

  • Have your child lead a discussion with family members on a favorite book or movie.
  • Create a ‘discussion jar’ with different topics to practice asking and answering questions.
  • Watch a children’s talk show episode and talk about how guests listen and respond to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with one-on-one conversations to build confidence, then gradually include more people. Praise all efforts and remind them that it’s okay to take turns and speak slowly.

Using simple discussion rules and gently reminding your child to stay on topic helps. You can also prepare guiding questions to steer the conversation.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may think discussions are only about sharing their own ideas without listening to others.
  • Some may confuse asking questions with interrupting or changing the subject.
  • Building on ideas can be misunderstood as repeating what others say without adding new thoughts.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use visual aids such as pictures to prompt discussion.
  • Allow extra response time and provide sentence starters.
  • Practice one skill at a time, such as just asking questions before moving on to building on ideas.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage the student to summarize points made by others.
  • Introduce new vocabulary related to discussion and debate.
  • Have the student lead the discussion and ask questions to peers or family members.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend about 10 minutes introducing discussion rules and vocabulary.
  • Use 20 minutes for reading and practicing the discussion activities.
  • Reserve 10–15 minutes for review, assessment questions, and reflection.

Standards

  • 4.SL.1c — Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions, ask questions to clarify, and build on others’ talk in conversations.
