Key Vocabulary

Theme
The main message, lesson, or moral that the author wants to share through the story.
Summary
A brief statement that tells the main points of a text.
Details
Important facts or information in the story that help explain the theme.

Detailed Activities

Read and Discuss the Story

  1. Read the selected short story aloud or have the student read it independently.
  2. Ask the student to think about what the story is mostly about and what lesson it might be teaching.
  3. Discuss the main events and important details of the story together.
Identify the Theme

  1. Explain the meaning of ‘theme’ using examples from familiar stories.
  2. Guide the student to pick out details from the story that hint at the theme.
  3. Write the possible theme on chart paper or whiteboard.
Write a Summary

  1. Help the student write a few sentences summarizing the story, focusing on key details and the theme.
  2. Encourage the student to use their own words to describe the story’s main idea and lesson.
  3. Review the summary together and make corrections if needed.
