Parent & Instructor Notes

  • This lesson helps build important speaking and listening skills your child will use in school and daily life.
  • Encourage your child to express their thoughts and ask questions at home during conversations.
  • Be patient and model good listening and speaking behaviors yourself.

Assessment Questions

  • Can you tell me one idea you shared during the discussion?
  • What question did you ask someone in the activity?
  • Why is it important to listen when others are speaking?

Extension Ideas

  • Have your child lead a family discussion about a fun topic like favorite animals or movies.
  • Create a ‘question jar’ where your child writes questions about stories or topics and you answer them together.
  • Watch a short video together and discuss what was learned, practicing asking and answering questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Encourage your child gently by praising any effort to share ideas. Start with simple questions and allow them to listen first before speaking. Role-playing can build confidence in a fun way.

Try to practice a little every day or several times a week. Short, consistent practice helps build comfort and skills over time.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students might think discussions are only about sharing their own ideas without listening to others.
  • They may confuse asking questions with interrupting or being rude.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use simpler stories or topics that interest the student.
  • Allow the student to prepare a few ideas or questions before the discussion.
  • Provide sentence starters such as ‘I think…’ or ‘Can you explain…?’
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage the student to summarize others’ points and explain how they are supported.
  • Introduce new vocabulary related to discussion and argument.
  • Challenge the student to lead a discussion with multiple participants.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Allow extra time for students who need to formulate their thoughts before speaking.
  • Keep activities short and focused to maintain attention.
  • Repeat discussions over several days to reinforce skills.

Standards

  • 5.SL.3 — Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.
