Frequently Asked Questions

Try asking simpler questions like ‘What happened most in the story?’ or ‘What is the story mostly about?’ Using pictures or story illustrations can also help.

Use stories about topics your child enjoys, such as animals or adventure. You can also turn the activity into a game by finding details like a treasure hunt.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Students may confuse the main idea with a detail or a personal opinion.
  • Students might list too many details without understanding which are most important.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter, simpler texts with clear main ideas.
  • Provide sentence starters for writing the main idea and details.
  • Use visuals or graphic organizers to help organize thoughts.
For Advanced Students:

  • Challenge students to identify themes and how they develop through the story.
  • Ask for more detailed summaries including character motivations or changes.
  • Encourage comparing multiple stories to analyze differences in main ideas.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Spend the first 15 minutes reading and discussing the story.
  • Use the next 15 minutes to identify and list main ideas and details.
  • Reserve the last 15 minutes for writing and reviewing the summary.

Standards

  • 8.RL.2 — Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.
