Parent & Instructor Notes

  • Encourage your child to listen without interrupting and to think about what others say before responding.
  • Keep conversations light and fun; the goal is to build confidence in speaking and listening skills.
  • Use everyday moments like family meals or walks to practice these skills naturally.

Assessment Questions

  • Can your child listen quietly while someone else is speaking?
  • Does your child ask questions to better understand what was said?
  • Can your child take turns speaking without interrupting?

Extension Ideas

  • Create a family discussion circle where each member shares one good thing about their day.
  • Record your child telling a short story and then play it back to discuss how clearly they communicated.
  • Use puppets or toys to role-play conversations practicing polite listening and speaking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gently remind your child to wait their turn to speak, and praise them when they listen quietly. Practice turn-taking games to reinforce this skill.

Choose stories and topics that interest your child, and keep activities short and interactive to maintain their attention.

Teacher’s Guide

Common Misconceptions:

  • Children may believe that speaking more means participating better rather than listening carefully.
  • Students might confuse interrupting with enthusiasm or eagerness to share.

Scaffolding Ideas:

For Struggling Students:

  • Use shorter conversation turns and simpler topics to build confidence.
  • Provide visual cues or signals for when it is their turn to speak.
For Advanced Students:

  • Encourage elaboration by asking for more details or examples.
  • Introduce new vocabulary related to expressing opinions and agreeing/disagreeing politely.

Pacing Recommendations:

  • Start with shorter activities (10-15 minutes) and gradually increase to the full 45 minutes as attention improves.
  • Allow flexibility to revisit activities if your child needs more practice before moving on.

Standards

  • 8.SL.1 — Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
