Objective: Students will be able to identify key details in an informational text to demonstrate understanding.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will listen to and understand an informational text read aloud.
  • Students will identify and recall at least two key details from the text.
  • Students will answer simple questions about the text to show comprehension.

Materials Needed

  • A short informational picture book appropriate for kindergarten (e.g., about animals, weather, or plants)
  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • Printed worksheet with simple questions about the text

Key Vocabulary

Informational Text
A type of writing that gives facts and information about a topic.
Key Details
Important pieces of information that tell more about the main idea.
Main Idea
What the text is mostly about.

Detailed Activities

Read Aloud and Discuss

  1. Choose a short informational picture book and read it aloud slowly and clearly.
  2. Pause occasionally to point to pictures and ask simple questions about what is happening.
  3. Encourage your child to share what they noticed or learned from the story.
Identify Key Details

  1. After reading, ask your child to name two important facts or details they remember from the story.
  2. Help your child repeat or write these details on paper using crayons or markers.
  3. Discuss why these details are important to understand the main idea.
Worksheet Completion

  1. Provide a simple worksheet with 3-4 questions about the text read aloud.
  2. Read the questions aloud and help your child answer them by recalling key details.
  3. Praise your child’s effort and review any missed answers gently.

  • This lesson focuses on listening comprehension and identifying important facts in a story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Try to keep reading sessions short and interactive. Use pictures and ask questions to keep them engaged.

Gently prompt them with hints or repeat parts of the story. Praise any effort to encourage learning.

Allow them to draw pictures or tell you the answers orally; writing is not required at this stage.
