Overview
This two-lesson Grade 1 sequence builds from efficient addition and subtraction strategies within 20 to solving story problems with an unknown number. Lesson 1 develops flexible strategy use with drawings, counters, ten frames, number paths, and equations. Lesson 2 applies those strategies to addition and subtraction situations in which the unknown may be the result, a missing part, or the starting amount.
